Batman: Gotham Knight is an anthology of six animated shorts that is supposed to fill the gaps between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. In that respect it introduces a couple of characters and shows Batman training but you get the impression that there is nothing here that will actually improve your viewing experience. There are no revelations and nothing seems to have been set in motion.
The stories themselves range from the slightly interesting to the completely forgettable and it’s individual moments of animation that stay in the mind rather than narrative or character. Easily the best segment here is the first featuring a group of kids discuss their own Bat-sightings and riffing on the idea of the caped nutter being different things to different people.
In all this is a disappointing set (especially to fans of Batman: The Animated Series) that would have worked better as DVD extras. By way of comparison, although fully animated, the segments here are nowhere near as interesting as the ‘animated comics’ that can be found on the I Am Legend DVD.
